Cholov Yisroel

Someone requested a post on Cholov Yisroel but i dont know enough about it and dont have time to write one. There's an issur d'rabanan against drinking milk from a gentile b/c of the fear he may have added non-kosher milk. There are many reasons to be meikil nowadays in America:
It's like a Jew watched it since the Government would punish any farmer who mixed in other milk. (This is R' Moshe's reason). It would be impractical or impossible for farmers nowadays to mix in other milk. A farmer of old whose cow didn't produce enough milk might be tempted to add some milk from the donkey, but nowadays there are thousands of cows who get milked by machines (it's not even milked by a gentile so may be muttar technically), and there are no other animals milked nearby (anothe reason to be matir).

There are also reasons to be machmir.

See here for a discussion of the issue that has R' Moshe's responsa in hebrew and English.

  2. If one can easily obtain Cholov Yisroel, why shouldn't one buy it?

For a few cents more, you might be getting a bigger share in the world to come.

Think about it, your spending those extra few cents for God's sake, don't you think that in only makes sense that God should reward you for that?

  4. You definitely have a point there, Lakewoodyid, and keeping cholov yisroel is certainly a commendable act that will reap divine rewards.
However, though it may be better to keep cholov yisroel, it's certainly not any worse to eat cholov stam. What I mean by this is if one is in a position where he can easily be makpid on cholov yisroel yet chooses not to do so, It most certainly wouldn't count against him, as is apparent from R Moshe's Tshuvah.
Furthermore, in some cases maybe keeping cholov yisroel isn't such an admirable deed. For example, a kollel guy struggling to support a family on a few bucks a year and food stamps might be remmiss to diminish his budget any more than necessary. Furthermore, does a person in a position like that (relying on food stamps and such) really have a right to force the American taxpayer to fork over additional funds just so he can be makpid on cholov yisroel? Something to think about.

  6. Muser Jew,

I'm not very familiar with milking and bottling procedures, but there could be a variety of shailos that could arise.

For example, tanker trucks. Do we know what product was in there before? Which product was just run on the bottling machinery? Its definitely better to have hashgocha on milk.

Once were having hashgocha, you might as well have it Cholov Yisroel.

  7. Lakewoodyid,
R Moshe specifically states that the whole reason we don't have to be makpid on cholov yisroel is that the bottling and milking procedures are so foolproof. There is no way there can possibly be a problem with the tanker trucks or else R Moshe wouldn't have made it so cleary OK.
My father was recently at R Dovid Feinstein's house. He served cholov stam milk.
My brother-in-law recently inquired of R Dovid on the topic of cholov yisroel. His response: Enjoy your cholov stam. There is no problem whatsoever.
In fact, the vending machines at Tifers Yerushalayim where R Moshe was Rosh Yeshivah and R Dovid currently is, the vending machines sell only cholov stam chocolate.
Lakewoodyid, please just go back to Lakewood and read up a bit before you start paskining halachos.

  11. keeping cholov yisroel is not an issue for milk. its about ice cream and chocolate.

  13. milk should have a hashgacha b/c of the non-kosher fish stuff thay add in for vitamins. if u have no other milk, u can get non-hechsher since its over 99.9% kosher (batel b'elef). - OU

r'moshe was said its like a jew is watching it since the government would punish people who add stuff.

  17. Glunker,
I don't quite understand the connection ur making between schools and kollel guys.
Furthermore, when R Moshe was Rosh Yeshivah of MTJ, he ordered cholov stam milk etc. to serve the bochurim. he said this is because money otherwise used toward tzedakah of the yeshivah should not be used for something as trivial as cholov yisroel
R Moshe said maybe it's a good idea to order cholov yisroel in yeshivos, not that they have to. He didn't.

  18. Ask glunker. He came up with that one.

  19. Perhaps it is admirable to order cholov yisrael if you can. However, let us say you are visiting relatives who baked a cholov-stam cheesecake? Should you be able to eat it?
